Santuario di Fonte Colombo

Santuario di Fonte Colombo

fontecolombo

Along the route halfway between Greccio and Rieti, the Santuary of Fonte Colombo is perched on a hill immersed in nature. This is not just a site to mark the route; we recommend you plan a thorough visit. The original Latin name Fons Colombarum was, according to some sources, given by Francis himself, who saw a group of doves stop to drink at a spring here. During restoration work, a Tau was discovered here which may have peen painted by the saint, who loved this symbol. Worth a visit: the simple church; the Cappella della Maddalena; the Cappella di San Michele; and the Sacro Speco grotto. It was here that Saint Francis, between 1222 and 1223, wrote the Regula Bullata (FF 1672). It was also in this place that the saint underwent a painful operation on his eyes at the end 1225 or the beginning of 1226 (FF 752; 1131; 1595-1597).
