Città di Castello

Città di Castello stretches across the Upper Tiber Valley on the Tuscan border. In 1224, shortly after having received the stigmata, Francis was a guest of the Salamacchi family opposite the current Monte di Pietà (cf. FF 442). Città di Castello has always been a thriving artistic center; many important artists have worked here and it is home to many noble palazzi and monumental churches, including the Duomo, San Domenico, and San Francesco. It is also the home town of one of the most important Umbrian artists of the 20th century, Alberto Burri, whose works are collected in two local museums. The Diocesan Museum is worth a visit, where the Canoscio Treasure, a collection of paleochristian liturgical objects—one of the oldest in the world—is on display.
