Gubbio

Gubbio is one of the towns most linked to Saint Francis, perhaps because of the peace treaty the Saint mediated in 1200 between the citizens of the town and the fierce wolf that was terrorizing them. Perched on the slope of Monte Ingino and known in ancient times as Ikuvium, Gubbio is home to the famous Eugubian Tablets (400 B.C.): seven bronze tablets inscribed with religious texts in ancient Umbrian and Latin. The town also boasts the remains of a Roman amphitheater and mausoleum. The historic center of town has retained its Medieval air, with beautiful civic and religious architecture.

Each year on May 15th, the town honors its patron saint, Saint Ubaldo, with the Corsa dei Ceri. This race, during which teams carry monumental wooden “candles” on litters up to the Sanctuary on the mountaintop, is not a mere sporting event for Gubbio’s citizens, but an expression of faith, joy, devotion, strength, and love for their patron saint and their town. Gubbio is also known as the City of Madmen: by running three times around the famous fountain, you, too, can receive the title of “certified madman”.

If you have time to spend a full day here, consider taking the self-guided “Frate Lupo” walking tour through the city. This route links the Franciscan sites in Gubbio–Saint Francis’ second home–winding its way along Medieval alleyways to stop at a number of sites, churches, and views particularly dear to the “Poverello”, and climbing Mount Ingino to the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo. A thoughtful and deep meditative approach will aid pilgrims in reflecting on themes of peace and brotherhood along the route, leading to a fully rounded experience of spirituality, art, and beautiful scenery. Participants are given a small guide and bookmark, which is stamped at every site along the route, and, upon completion, a symbolic certificate and Tau as mementos of this small but intense experience. Book ahead at www.fratellolupogubbio.it.
