Santuario di Rivotorto

Santuario di Rivotorto

rivotorto

Rivotorto’s “tugurio” (hut) is another testament to the life of the first Franciscan brotherhood.

The name “Rivotorto” derives from the mountain stream which descends from Subasio and runs by the left side of the church. Inside the sanctuary, the central nave holds the tiny stone hut, divided into three rooms: the saint’s cell (with the supine statue of Francis), the chapel, and the kitchen, or “fire room”.

Saint Francis and his first followers lived here until moving to the Porziuncola. The current sanctuary was built in the mid-1800s on the ruins of a 17th century church, destroyed in an earthquake.
