Santuario di Poggio Bustone

Santuario di Poggio Bustone

The Santuario di Poggio Bustone once belonged to the Benedictine abbey of Farfa, which donated it to Francis in 1217. The church and convent are dedicated to Saint James, apostle and patron saint of pilgrims. There are no major artworks in the convent , but the the simple cloister and humble architecture reflect the virtues of Assisi’s beloved saint.  A pleasant trail lined with six chapels leads to the Santuario Superiore or Grotta della Rivelazione, in which Francis would retreat to pray and where he received the vision confirming having been pardoned for sins committed during his youth (FF 363-365; 1057). The Eremo Inferiore, today located beneath the convent, and the Tempietto della Pace, built in 1980, are worth a visit. It was here that the rapid growth of Francis’ order was foreseen.
