Lying at the foot of the Tuscan Apennines, the city was founded by two pilgrim saints, Arcano and Egidio, upon their return from the Holy Land, according to legend. Sansepolcro was the birthplace of Piero della Francesca; some of his most important works are on display at the Civic Museum. Other works by Renaissance and Mannerist painters–including Luca Signorelli, Perugino, and Rosso Fiorentino–adorn the churches here. The Aboca Museum is worth a visit, documenting and reviving the ancient use of medicinal plants and herbs.
