Pieve Santo Stefano

This town is located in the geographic center of the Tiber River Valley, the source of which is less than 30 km away. Pieve is known as “The Diary City” as it is home to a public archive which holds a vast collection of writings from ordinary citizens documenting their daily lives and Italian history, including war journals, love letters from centuries ago, and a bedsheet used to record a family history.  Visit the Santuario della Madonna dei Lumi, a sanctuary built between 1590 and 1625 to honor of the image of the Madonna that was often visited by groups of glowing angels. The church’s sumptuous cupola is covered in lead. For pilgrims, it is interesting to note that inside there are images of Saint James and Saint Christopher, protectors of pilgrims and travelers.
