Monastero di San Benedetto al Subasio

Monastero di San Benedetto al Subasio

benedettosubasio

This abbey is along the route of Saint Francis’ Way after exiting the woods. Its history is uncertain; it may have been founded during the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia or at the beginning of the 12th century. Destroyed at the end of the 1300s, the monastery had been home to hermits for more than four centuries; it was partially restored in the 1800s. The Benedictine monks of Subasio granted the Porziuncola church to Francis without asking anything in return. The saint, however, decreed that each year a basket of fish would be donated to the Benedictines, as a symbolic “rent”. (FF 1465; 1552).
