Final leg. It takes place mostly on a flat road. Highlights of the day are the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell’Oro ( St. Mary of the Gold) where St. Bernardino of Siena wanted to build the ancient Franciscan convent. The Church of St. Antonio, also called “The Anthonian Protomartyrs’ Sanctuary”, is the final destination of our pilgrimage. It enshrines the relics of our saints. Paintings by Piero Casentini adorn the altar.

For the entire way the route follows the beautiful countryside between Narni and Sangemini. Along the route you can visit first the beautiful tenth century Abbey of St. Cassiano (where time seems to stand still!) and then the ancient Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ponte, place of pilgrimage since ancient times. La Cerqua , a very small village, surrounds the Sanctuary of Santa Maria della Quercia (St. Mary of the Oak Tree). Sangemini, St. Peter’s birthplace, is an enchanting medieval village rich in history. The Church of St. Francis in Sangemini is our arrival point.

Challenging path due to the difficult ascent to the Hermitage of Portaria, also known as the Romita, in Cesi and subsequent descent towards Cesi. Along the way it is possible to visit the wonderful archaeological site of Carsulae, a very important ancient Roman city. We reach the Romita, an ancient franciscan Hermitage, deep in the lush green of the forest. Saint Francis of Assisi, who used to pray here, had the monastery built in 1213. It is believed that here St. Francis composed the Exhortatio ad laudem Dei, a religious canticle, considered as an early version of Cantico di Frate Sole (Canticle of the Sun). Possibility of accommodation. The village of Cesi, overlooking the Terni basin, is rich in history. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is our arrival point.

Path with flat stretches but made difficult both by the length and the many ups and downs of the hills. This is definitely the richest path of highly spiritual places of faith of our pilgrimage. It starts with the Church of St. Michele Arcangelo ( Michael Arcangel) , an old Benedictine Abbey in Schifanoia and continues with the ancient Roman Church of St. Pudenziana and the church of St. Angelo in Massa, originally a Benedictine abbey, and finishes with the impressive Albornoz Fortress in Narni, the land of St. Adiuto. Narni is a marvelous medieval town with stunning treasures, famous for the magnificent cathedral and for the “ Race to the Ring”, a festival dedicated to the Patron Saint Giovenale (St. Juvenal). The thirteenth century Church of St. Francis is our arrival point.

Challenging path due to the ups and downs of the hills and to a high mountain pass towards Calvi dell’Umbria. Pleasant walking through natural surroundings in which to enjoy marvelous landscapes. Just after Aguzzo, the village of St. Accursio, Franciscan protomartyr, the route leads to the Hermitage of St. Urban called the Sacred Hermitage where St. Francis, during his stay, turned water into wine. For this reason, the poor of Assisi renamed this place the ”Umbrian Cana”. In Calvi dell’Umbria, at the little town of St. Berardo, our walk comes to an end. Here we can admire a monumental earthenware Nativity of standing figures of the 16th century attributed to Giacomo and Raffaele from Montereale. The Church of St. Maria Assunta is our arrival point.

Challenging path due to the ups and downs of the hills surrounding Terni. The pilgrimage takes place surrounded by natural scenery . The Church of Santa Maria della Pace ( St. Mary of Peace) enshrines a cycle of paintings by Stefano di Stasio devoted to the Franciscan Proto-martyrs. The trail takes us past the evocative ruins of the Benedictine Abbey of San Benedetto (St. Benedict) in Fundis and the Monastery of San Simeone (St. Simeon) occupied today by the religious community of the Ricostruttori nella Preghiera; these sites enrich the landscape and the gorgeous natural beauty of the hills. Stroncone, St.Ottone’s birthplace is one of the most charming medieval villages of this area. The thirteenth century Convent of San Francesco (St. Francis) is our arrival point.
